How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the breakdown of tooth enamel caused by sugar from soft drinks, candy and sweet snacks. The culprit is bacteria that thrives on sweets and carbohydrates and produces an acid that destroys tooth enamel.

Here's what you can do to prevent tooth decay.

1. Visit your dentist twice a year for an oral exam and treatment.

2. Eat nutritious, sugar free foods.

3. If you must eat sweets, brush your teeth as soon as possible.

4. Chew sugarless gum when you can't brush. This helps remove particles and sugar that sticks to the teeth.

5. Stay away from sugary drinks like sodas and bottled lemonade.

6. Brush your teeth in the morning, after each meal and before going to bed.

7. Use fluoride toothpaste.

8. Drink plenty of water, instead of carbonated sodas.

9. Floss daily to remove particle from between teeth where your toothbrush can't reach.

10. Brush your teeth properly. Here are some tips on brushing your teeth the right way.
